Halo Star Abundances and r-Process Synthesis

چکیده
The heavy elements formed by neutron capture processes have an interesting history from which we can extract useful clues to and constraints upon the star formation and nucleosynthesis history of Galactic matter. Of particular interest are the heavy element compositions of extremely metal-deficient stars. At metallicities [Fe/H] ≤ -2.5, stellar abundance data (for both halo field stars and globular cluster stars) provides strong confirmation of the occurrence of a robust r-process mechanism for the production of the main r-process component, at mass numbers A ∼ 130-140. The identification of an environment provided by massive stars and associated Type II supernovae as an r-process site seems compelling. Scatter in the ratio [r-process/Fe] provides a measure of the level of inhomogeneity characteristic of the halo gas at that early epoch. Increasing levels of s-process enrichment with increasing metallicity reflect the delayed contributions from the intermediate mass stars that provide the site for s-process nucleosynthesis during the AGB phase of their evolution. For the mass region A ∼ 130, the abundance patterns in even the most metal deficient stars are not consistent with the solar system r-process abundance distribution, providing evidence for the fact that the r-process isotopes identified in solar system matter are in fact the products of two distinct r-processes nucleosynthesis events. We review recent observational studies of heavy element abundances in low metallicity stars and explore some implications of these results for nucleosynthesis and early Galactic chemical evolution.

r-Process Enhanced Halo Stars
Abundance observations indicate the presence of rapid-neutron capture (i.e., r-process) elements in old Galactic halo and globular cluster stars. These observations provide insight into the nature of the earliest generations of stars in the Galaxy – the progenitors of the halo stars – responsible for neutron-capture synthesis of the heavy elements. The large star-to-star scatter observed in the...
متن کاملA SIMPLE MODEL FOR r-PROCESS SCATTER AND HALO EVOLUTION
Recent observations of heavy elements produced by rapid neutron capture (r-process) in the halo have shown a striking and unexpected behavior: within a single star, the relative abundances of r-process elements heavier than Eu are the same as the same as those of solar system matter, while across stars with similar metallicity Fe/H, the r/Fe ratio varies over two orders of magnitude. In this pa...

Abundance observations indicate the presence of rapid-neutron capture (i.e., r-process) elements in old Galactic halo and globular cluster stars. These observations demonstrate that the earliest generations of stars in the Galaxy, responsible for neutron-capture synthesis and the progenitors of the halo stars, were rapidly evolving. Abundance comparisons among several halo stars show that the h...
متن کاملBeryllium abundances and star formation in the halo and in the thick disk
Context. Beryllium is a pure product of cosmic ray spallation. This implies a relatively simple evolution in time of the beryllium abundance and suggests its use as a time-like observable. Aims. Our goal is to derive abundances of Be in a sample of 90 stars, the largest sample of halo and thick disk stars analyzed to date. We study the evolution of Be in the early Galaxy and its dependence on k...

Abundance observations indicate the presence of rapid-neutron capture (i.e., r-process) elements in old Galactic halo and globular cluster stars. Recent observations of the r-process-enriched star BD+17◦3248 include new abundance determinations for the neutron-capture elements Cd I (Z=48), Lu II (Z = 71) and Os II (Z = 76), the first detections of these elements in metal-poor r-process-enriched...
